One of the prominent features in today’s landscapes are beautiful, green, lush lawns.
But recently our lawns have evolved into highly specialized responsibilities and
nowadays people are rightly becoming more concerned with regards of the long-term
effects of fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and germicides on our children,
pets, and the environment. Most lawns need to be fertilized several times a year and
require regular maintenance, they need to have invasive weeds killed and some lawns
can become infested with insects, which need to be treated.  The average household
with a 10,000 square foot lot uses up to 3,000 gallons weekly on typical spray
irrigation. Running a conventional sprinkler for 2 hours can use up to 500 gallons of
water. Excessive irrigation can cause fungal problems, runoff, and high costs
associated with watering and maintenance. Also, fuel for power mowers that produce
toxic emissions, water consumption and your weekend time are all part of the cost of
lawn maintenance. Reducing the size of your lawn can benefit the environment while
saving you time, energy and money and the result does not have to be a loss in visual
appeal. 9th Avenue Designs, LLC would be happy to discuss your design solutions
that help reduce the lawn size. Creative sustainable design alternatives does have to
only be groundcovers an tall grasses.
•        Replace sections of the lawn with resilient grasses and ground cover that
requires little care with regards to mowing, fertilizer and watering
•        Creative designs can include use of decorative permeable paving. Use fountain
or water feature to create grand entrance or a pond with benches, statues, stones can
be added to enhance the appearance.
•        Ornamental Grasses
•        Flower & Shrub Beds
•        Lawn Shape: by designing lawn shapes that are easier to mow and require less
trimming.
If thoughtfully designed the above can save a lot of your time, money, labor and at the
same time provide a clean alternative for the environment. 9th Avenue Designs, LLC
is not suggesting that we eradicated all lawns but rather introduce some alternatives
and reduce the size of lawns. Regardless the size of the lawn and planting beds we are
advocates of organic fertilizer, pest and disease control.
